Ruth: Welcome to the blog, Theresa. It’s great to have you here and be able to share more about you with the readers. Tell us about Click Virtual Assistance.
Theresa: I’ve been in business since summer 2007 after graduating from the Red Deer College, Virtual Assistant program. I floundered somewhat in the beginning trying to decide what types of services I would offer. I decided at that point to get some training in specific programs such as 1 Shopping Cart and social media. Ever since then, I have taken many courses to help expand my expertise and services I offer. At this point, I offer e-commerce, WordPress, membership setups, and social media set-up and customization.
Ruth: Would you share what led you to consider a virtual profession and how you got started?
Theresa: After our first child was born, I worked part-time for the government of British Columbia as an admin assistant. After our third child was born, I knew I wanted to still work part-time or actually quit my job as I had 3 children under 5 at that point. When the BC government started laying people off or asking for volunteers to leave, I took advantage of this. Six months later I was offered a work-at-home position with a Health Canada team which introduced me to being a ‘work- at-home mom.’ Once that contract ended, I discovered the world of Virtual Assistants and signed up for the Red Deer College VA program. I graduated in the summer of 2007 and have not looked back!
Ruth: Have you had a mentor or sponsor to support, guide, encourage and open doors for you?
Theresa: Yes, I had a VA mentor in my hometown. She asked me to join her multi-va team and showed me the technical in and outs of 1 Shopping Cart, FTP clients, newsletters, etc. She was invaluable in introducing me to much of the technical side of being a VA. I then became a member of VAClassroom which introduced me to many courses in social media and beyond.
Ruth: What advice would you offer to someone considering a virtual career?
Theresa: Interview current VAs and ask lots of questions. Do a lot of research on the web so you are familiar with which tasks VAs can do and which are the most sought after skills. Consider taking courses to upgrade your skills that you know clients need. Get involved with VA organizations such as IVAA. Really seek out of VAs who have gone before you and learn from them. Get involved in VA forums, ask questions in the forum, and give good, sound advice. It will come back to you in return.
Ruth: How will a potential client know ClickVA is right for them?
Theresa: ClickVA is all about finding a solution, not just any solution but the right solution for a client’s needs. So if that means, spending time researching options or learning new software, then that’s what I do. In doing that, not only does the client win but I add a host of new services to my VA portfolio.
Ruth: Any last comments you’d like to share?
Theresa: Being a VA is all about solving problems. If you can rethink ideas, invent solutions, and put them into practice, you’ll do well as a VA and in any aspect of your life!
Ruth: Thank you, Theresa.
